A long stay in Florianopolis

The view from the hostel

A long stay

After traveling for many times, I got tired of moving all the time. So finally, instead of continuing visiting Brazil, I decided to settle down at Florianopolis. Also, I already did a trip 2 years ago in the Northern part of Brazil.

I stayed in the neighborhood of Fortaleza close to Barra da Lagoa, a quiet place with an astonishing view on a lake.

My activities

I didn’t visit much of the island, but only the major points: Playa do Este and the Lisboa de conception. Instead, I preferred doing activities. Thanks to the guitar in the hostel, I practiced one month and now I start to have good skills. Also, I started yoga and capoeira classes in the neighborhood.

For the second time, I had used my climbing shoes I am taking since the beginning. A nice boulder effort followed with an artisanal draft beer! I discovered this place with a data scientist I met thanks to a meetup group.
The funny part is that we already met, a few weeks before on a community programming project on the internet without knowing we will both be in Florianopolis.

The new things I have studied

Finally, I took time to study and read. My last hot topic is Psychology: I might recommend one book and two MOOCS:

Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind [BOOK]

A book studying the history and behaviors of us from 100,000 years ago until now. A best seller, that change your view of the world.

Introduction to Psychology [MOOC on Coursera]

A complete introduction to many topics of psychology. The teacher is passionate and funny, thus the classes are easy to take.

Buddhism and modern psychology [MOOC on Coursera]

Buddhism awoke my curiosity and I wanted an introduction. This MOOC is well done and presented by an interesting teacher. However, as I am an engineer and deep scientific believer, only spiritual notions are hard to study. This MOOC by mixing the up-to-date science about the brain and comparing with the speech of Buddha was exactly what I was looking for. I kept my scientific point of reference and I discovered the Buddhism.
